As the FHIR community continues to develop and refine resources for specialist care records, I've started a blog over at Lunaria Clinical.
Capturing details of the insertion of non-electro-mechanical devices such as needles, tubes and catheters using existing resources such as FHIR Device, DeviceMetric and DeviceUseStatement is going to be challenging.
We may need extensions that allow the structuring of concepts such as guidance, positioning and composite devices. An example of the latter would be a multi-lumen central venous catheter which is essentially 1..n single lumen catheters bonded together.
