Chinese Hamster
Cricetulus griseus
Strictly speaking, a member of the Rat-like hamster group rather than a Dwarf, Chinese are
commonly kept and sold as pets in the UK. They have longer, slimmer bodies than the Russians,
with small tails up to 2cm in length. The markings are quite different, with a well-defined
straight line separating the belly fur from the more brown fur over the dorsum (back) and head.
(Russians have a pattern consisting of three arches separating belly fur from the rest).
Chinese are tame, easy to handle and are reported to live a little longer than other hamsters.
They are said to prefer sharing accommodation in pairs or trios rather than large groups.
One coat patterning variety is known:
Dominant Spot
A white patterning factor similar to the Dominant Spot in Syrians. |
